Learning To Walk

“Until one is committed, there is hesitancy,

the chance to draw back, always ineffectiveness.”

Concerning all acts of initiative (and creation), there is one elementary truth

the ignorance of which kills countless ideas and splendid plans:

that the moment one definitely commits oneself, then Providence moves too.”

-W.H. Murray

Last October I told you about our Grandson Parker struggling to take his first steps (exciting moments for Mom, Dad, Grammy & Grandude!).

What struck me most as I observed his efforts was his pause- that moment of hesitation just before he moved his right foot.

While I can’t recall my own ordeal of learning to walk, it had to be tough.

Try. Fall down. Try. Fall down. Try. Fall down…

As you can see in the GIF at the top, Parker eventually discovered “the secret”.

The thing is, he would’ve never succeeded had he not mustered the courage to overcome his hesitation- to lift his right foot…to commit.

As I write, we’ve crossed the threshold into a brand-new year.

This is the beginning of the first full work week of 2023.

Many have made New Year Resolutions, perhaps even…you.

According to Webster, a resolution is, “a formal expression of intent.”

I find the operative word in that definition to be intent.

And here’s the question- will 2023 be your best year yet?

Or 12 months from now will you be…just a year older?

According to a recent study, the average American gives up on their “resolutions” by February 1st, a mere 32 days into the year.

Perhaps this is because they were only intentions to begin with?

Here’s the deal…

You and I are measured by and reap the consequences of our choices, actions, and behaviors…NOT our intentions.

So- what’s it gonna be for you?

When it comes to goal abandonment and lack of growth & progress, most point to inadequate dedication or insufficient willpower.

We tend to “beat ourselves up”- at least for a minute (or two).

However- when we peel back a few layers we can pinpoint where abandonment begins- in our moments of hesitation…

Hesitation to fully, honestly, and openly engage.

Hesitation to act…to take the risk of “lifting your right foot”.

Hesitation to do it again…and again…and again…until you get it right.

The thing is- we only move toward our desired horizons once we overcome our hesitation to act.

Now…back to our grandson and his walking adventure…

Here’s a picture from two days ago- of Parker running in the park:

Go figure…

When you and I have the courage to act- that’s when we discover what W.H. Murray meant as he journaled, “…then Providence moves too.”

I’m continually blown away at how this phenomenal truth plays out in my life; that is- when I get myself (and my hesitations) out of the way.

Why not test this for yourself?

Overcome whatever hesitations you have…today.

Offer that compliment.

Write that text or email.

Make that phone call.

Schedule that meeting.

Say No.

Ask for what you want…

And please- do it now.

The rest of us are eagerly waiting to support you in moving toward whatever goodness you have to offer.

Talk soon,
