“If I can just get through the day…”
Ever heard yourself [thinking] this?
To what end?
You might reply, “Well…if you were in my shoes, you’d ‘get it’.”
You might eve
n offer a few lines from a ‘cryin’ in your beer” Tom Petty song:
“You don't know how it feels You don't know how it feels
No, you don’t know how it feels- to be me.”
Really?
Are you [honestly] a victim?
Of what?
When you’re ‘playing the victim’, stuff (also known as “life”) happens to you.
What might happen if you shift your context?
What if, rather than thinking ‘stuff’ happens to you, you consider maybe…just maybe… it’s happening for you?
Think about it.
Without your screw-ups, challenges, struggles, and short-comings, you wouldn’t be you.
You wouldn’t have your awareness and insight.
You likely wouldn’t have developed as much character.
You wouldn’t have had occasions to grow patience, to demonstrate integrity.
You’d have lost your opportunities to show compassion and offer empathy.
Just ‘getting through’ today?
Is tomorrow [just] another day to ‘get through’ as well?
After you ‘get through’ all your days, then what?
You need today. And tomorrow. And the day after.
And whatever is happening for you offers you a chance to ‘show up’.
Why not take a few lines from my favorite [totally different] Tom Petty song-
“No, I’ll stand my ground
Won’t be turned around
And I’ll keep this world from draggin’ me down
Gonna stand my ground
And I won’t back down.”
You see, you need…you.
And the rest of us?
We need you as well.
So thanks for taking advantage of what life throws your way.
Thanks for showing up!
Until next time,
-Tim
